This study aims to analyze the effect of fuel atomization on the performance of the main engine of MV Lumoso Karunia IX, focusing on injector nozzle conditions, combustion efficiency, and fuel consumption. The research method used is qualitative descriptive, with data collected through direct observation in the engine room, analysis of operational logbooks, visual inspection of injector nozzles, spray pattern tests, and interviews with the Chief Engineer and cadet officers. The results indicate that several cylinders, particularly cylinders 3 and 5, experienced a 13–15% decrease in injection pressure and lower exhaust gas temperatures compared to other cylinders. Worn or partially clogged nozzles produced uneven spray patterns, resulting in incomplete combustion, increased carbon deposits, and exhaust gas temperature fluctuations. The main factors contributing to this condition were extended maintenance intervals, use of non-standard tools, and unstable fuel quality. The technical impacts of poor atomization included reduced combustion efficiency, increased fuel consumption by approximately 5% per hour of operation, excessive engine vibration, and a higher risk of secondary damage to pistons, rings, and cylinder heads. Corrective actions, including nozzle cleaning and replacement, injection pump calibration, and fuel timing inspection, proved effective in restoring spray patterns and stabilizing exhaust gas temperatures. Based on these findings, it is recommended that the vessel implement regular scheduled maintenance, use standard tools, monitor fuel quality, and provide crew training to maintain optimal main engine performance.
